Compact & Portable Photo Printers

Purpose-built for photo printing rather than documents, smaller footprint, dedicated photo paper trays, and output quality a step above what a general-purpose inkjet produces.

Canon Selphy CP1500 - Compact dye-sublimation photo printer producing 10×15cm prints.

Uses a dye-sub process that applies colour and a protective laminate in a single pass, output is immediately waterproof, fingerprint-resistant, and fade-rated by Canon for approximately 100 years when stored away from direct light.

Connects via Wi-Fi, USB, or directly from a memory card.

Uses RP-108 ink/paper packs (yielding 108 prints per pack).

Suited to households wanting lab-quality 6×4 prints at home without a full-size printer.

Canon Selphy Square QX20 - Portable wireless Selphy producing square 68×68mm prints using the same dye-sublimation process as the CP1500.

More compact and suited to social or creative printing, the square format works well for journalling, scrapbooking, and room decoration.

Uses XS-20L ink/paper packs.

Not interchangeable with CP1500 consumables.

Home Photo Inkjet Printers

Six-colour inkjet MFPs that handle both everyday document printing and noticeably better photo output than standard 4-colour inkjets.

Epson Expression Photo XP-8700 ($278.48 - In Stock) - 6-colour Claria Photo HD inkjet MFP with auto duplex, dual paper trays (separate trays for A4 plain paper and photo paper), CD/DVD printing, rear specialty media feed, and a 10.9cm touchscreen.

Prints up to A4 at 5,760×1,440 dpi.

Wireless, Wi-Fi Direct, and AirPrint.

Uses Epson 312/312XL cartridges (individual CMYK plus light cyan and light magenta).

A strong home photo printer for users who also print regular documents and want both handled from one device.

Epson Expression Photo XP-970  - An upgrade from the XP-8700 with a higher-resolution flatbed scanner (1,200×2,400 dpi), faster print speeds, and improved paper handling.

Same 6-colour Claria Photo HD ink system.

The better choice if scanning quality is as important as print quality, suited to households digitising photo albums or artwork alongside regular photo printing.

Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000  - Wide-format 6-colour photo inkjet printing up to A3+.

The only home-class photo printer in the stocked range that goes beyond A4.

Claria Photo HD inks with borderless printing at A3+, suited to photography enthusiasts producing larger prints at home without stepping into professional printer territory.

Canon PIXMA TS9565a 13-Pack Value Bundle  - The TS9565a is a premium 6-colour PIXMA MFP with auto duplex, wireless, ADF, and a 10.8cm touchscreen.

This bundle includes the printer plus a full set of PGI-680/CLI-681 ink cartridges and paper, good value if you'd be purchasing ink immediately after buying the printer anyway.

EcoTank Photo Printers

Refillable 6-colour tank printers combining photo quality with low per-print running costs.

The higher upfront cost is offset by the dramatically cheaper bottled ink compared to cartridges, suited to anyone printing photos regularly at home.

Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500  - 6-colour refillable photo MFP with auto duplex, wireless, built-in flatbed scanner, and a memory card slot.

Included ink covers thousands of prints before a refill is needed.

Produces gallery-quality borderless photo output up to A4.

The most practical photo EcoTank for enthusiasts printing frequently without wanting the ongoing cartridge cost.

Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550  - Adds A3+ photo printing to the ET-8500's feature set.

The same 6-colour ink system and refillable tank economics, extended to larger print sizes.

The right choice for photographers who regularly print A3 format at home and want to keep per-print costs manageable over time.

Professional Photo & Fine Art Printers

Epson SureColor P906 - 10-colour UltraChrome HDX pigment ink printer producing prints up to A2.

Pigment inks deliver a wider colour gamut and archival longevity significantly beyond what dye-based inkjet inks achieve, Epson rates prints at over 200 years of display life under glass.

Suited to professional photographers, studios, and artists producing fine art prints, exhibition work, or client-delivered large-format output.

Wireless and Ethernet connectivity, auto duplex on plain paper, 6-colour touchscreen panel.

Photo Scanners

Epson FastFoto FF-680W - High-speed dedicated photo scanner designed specifically for digitising physical photo collections.

Scans at up to 300dpi at 1 photo per second, a 36-exposure film roll equivalent scanned in under a minute.

Automatically corrects fading, restores colour, and can scan both front and back of a photo in a single pass.

Wi-Fi and USB connectivity.

Suited to households with large existing photo archives to digitise.

Epson Perfection V850 Pro - Professional flatbed scanner with dual-lens optics capable of scanning at up to 6,400dpi optical resolution.

Includes dedicated film holders for 35mm, medium format, and 4×5" film, suited to photographers digitising film negatives and slides at archival quality.

The highest-resolution scanner in the stocked range and the right choice for professional photographers and archivists requiring maximum detail and colour accuracy.

What to Expect from Each Printer Type?

Selphy dye-sub printers produce excellent small prints, but consumable cost adds up. An RP-108 pack for the CP1500 yields 108 prints.

That's a reasonable per-print cost, but packs need replacing regularly if you print frequently.

Selphy suits users who print occasional batches, holiday photos, birthday portraits, events, rather than continuous daily output.

The quality for 10×15cm is genuinely comparable to a photo lab, the cost model suits occasional rather than high-volume printing.

A 6-colour inkjet produces visibly better skin tones and gradients than a 4-colour printer, but paper choice matters as much as the printer.

The light cyan and light magenta channels in the XP-8700, XP-970, ET-8500, and ET-8550 handle smooth colour transitions that 4-colour printers render with visible banding.

Printing the same file on cheap plain paper versus Epson Premium Glossy produces a more dramatic quality difference than switching between printers.

If you're investing in a photo printer, budget for quality photo paper, it makes a real difference.

EcoTank Photo printers run a one-time ink priming cycle on first setup.

When you first power on an EcoTank Photo printer, it fills the delivery tubes using a portion of the included ink.

This happens once only.

The included ink still leaves substantial capacity after priming, the ET-8550 is rated for thousands of A4 photo prints from the included bottles, but the first-run process takes time and consumes some ink before you print a single page.

The SureColor P906 requires colour management for professional output.

The P906 is a professional tool with professional expectations.

Accurate, consistent colour requires a calibrated monitor, appropriate ICC profiles for your paper, and an understanding of soft-proofing in Lightroom or Photoshop.

Out of the box it produces good results, with proper colour management, it produces work that holds up commercially.

If colour management is unfamiliar territory, the ET-8550 is a better starting point.

The FastFoto FF-680W is genuinely fast, but its auto-enhancement can be heavy-handed.

The automatic fading correction and colour restoration works well on consumer prints that have yellowed or faded.

For prints already in good condition, or where you want to preserve original colour rendering exactly, turn enhancement off and scan in standard mode, the raw scan quality at 300dpi is still excellent.

Choosing the Right Photo Printer

For occasional home photo printing: Selphy CP1500 or QX20.

Lab-quality results for small prints, compact footprint.

Factor consumable cost per print into your decision based on expected volume.

For home use printing both documents and photos: XP-8700 or XP-970.

The 6-colour ink system produces clearly better photo results than a standard 4-colour inkjet while still handling everyday documents.

The XP-970 is the better pick if scanning quality matters as much as print quality.

For regular home photo printing with lower running costs: EcoTank ET-8500 or ET-8550.

Higher purchase price, significantly lower per-print ink cost.

The ET-8550 adds A3+ for photographers who print larger.

For A3+ home printing without the EcoTank price: XP-15000.

Wide-format photo output at a lower upfront cost.

For professional or fine art output: SureColor P906.

10-colour pigment ink, archival longevity, A2 maximum print size, plan for colour management setup.

For digitising photo collections: FastFoto FF-680W for speed and volume on good-condition prints; Perfection V850 Pro for maximum quality and film scanning.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What's the difference between dye-sublimation (Selphy) and inkjet photo printing?

Selphy printers use a dye-sublimation process, colour is transferred from a ribbon to the paper using heat, then a protective laminate is applied in a final pass.

The result is a true continuous-tone print with no visible dots, immediately waterproof and resistant to fingerprints.

Inkjet photo printers spray microscopic ink droplets onto paper, at high resolution with good photo paper the results are excellent, but the output takes a moment to dry and is more vulnerable to moisture and handling before it sets.

For small prints (6×4, square), dye-sub quality is hard to beat.

For A4 and larger, inkjet is the practical choice.

2. Will Selphy CP1500 and QX20 consumables work in each other's printers?

No, they use entirely different ink/paper pack formats.

The CP1500 uses RP-108 packs (108 prints, 10×15cm).

The QX20 uses XS-20L packs (square 68×68mm prints).

The printers and their consumables are not interchangeable in any way.

3. Is the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 worth the price over a cartridge photo printer like the XP-970?

It depends on how often you print photos.

The ET-8550 ($1,206.95) costs significantly more upfront, but its refillable ink tanks deliver a far lower cost per print than 312XL cartridges in the XP-970.

For someone printing dozens of photos per month, the ET-8550's running cost advantage compounds quickly, and it adds A3+ capability the XP-970 doesn't have.

For occasional photo printing, the XP-970 ($367.90) is the more economical total investment.
