How To Find An IP Address Of A Printer

Tracking Down Your Printer’s IP Address
We've all had that moment. You click print, wait for the whirring sound... and nothing. Absolute silence. Usually, it's because your computer and printer have stopped talking to each other, and you need the printer's IP address to get them back on speaking terms. Think of it like a digital phone number, without it, your laptop is just shouting into the void.
6 Ways To Find Your Printer’s IP Address
1. The Screen Method
- If your printer actually has a display screen, you’re halfway there already.
- Just open the Settings or Network menu.
- Look for something that says TCP/IP or Wi-Fi Status.
- You’re looking for a set of numbers that looks like 192.168.1.XX. Once you see that, you're golden. That’s the IP address of your printer.
2. The "Press and Hope" Method
No screen? No problem. Most printers can print out their own IP address.
- Find the Information (i) button or the Wi-Fi button.
- Hold it down, for 5 seconds to 10 seconds.
- It’ll eventually open a page. Look for IPv4 Address. It’s usually under a list of tech specifications.
3. Let Windows Do the Work
- Open the Control Panel and click on Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the printer and hit Properties.
- Click the Ports tab. Usually, the IP is just present there in the list.
4. The Mac Shortcut
For the Mac users, it’s even simpler.
- Go to System Settings (or System Preferences) and find Printers & Scanners.
- Click your printer.
- Hit Options & Supplies. The IP is usually right there in the General box, sometimes labeled as "Location."
5. Check the Router
- Since your router is the one that actually gives the printer its address, it knows everything.
- Type your router’s IP into your web browser.
- Log in and look for a list of Attached Devices.
- Your printer should be in there somewhere, likely named after its brand (HP, Brother, Epson, etc.).
6. Use the app on your phone
Most people forget this one. If you’ve got the HP Smart, Epson iPrint, or Canon app on your phone, you're halfway there.
- Open the app
- Tap the printer icon.
- Dive into Advanced Settings or Network Information. The IP is usually present there.
Still stuck?
If it’s still not showing up, the printer might have just dropped off the Wi-Fi entirely. The "golden rule" of IT applies here: turn it off, wait thirty seconds, and turn it back on. It works more often than it should.
