Canon PGI‑680 & CLI‑681 Ink Cartridges
Canon PGI-680 & CLI-681 ink cartridges are designed for the Canon PIXMA TR and TS series. The PGI-680 is a pigment-based black ink cartridge, making it resistant to smearing on plain paper, ideal for sharp text documents. The CLI-681 is a dye-based ink set covering photo black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. Printers using the PGI-680 black cartridge include: PIXMA TR7560, TR8560, TR8660, TS6160, TS6260, TS6360, TS6365, TS706, TS8160, TS8260, TS8360, TS8360a, TS9160, TS9560, and TS9565. The range includes standard and higher-yield variants (XL and XXL). Both genuine and compatible ink cartridges are stocked, and all products are covered by Australian Consumer Law.
This cartridge system uses two distinct black inks for a reason: the pigment-based PGI-680 sits in a larger tank and handles everyday text printing, while the dye-based CLI-681 photo black produces the continuous tones needed for portrait and landscape photos. If you print a high volume of mixed text and photos, the XXL variants of both are worth considering, reducing replacement frequency and lowering cost per page over time. For PIXMA TS8160, TS8260, TS8360, TS8360a, and TS9160 owners, an optional CLI-681 Photo Blue ink cartridge is also available and occupies a dedicated sixth slot, it is not available for the TR or lower TS models. Compatible ink cartridges are available as singles and in bundle packs. Under the Australian Consumer Law, compatible cartridges sold by Ink Depot carry a product warranty, and using them does not void your printer's manufacturer warranty.
In real-world photo printing, the CLI-681 cyan and magenta deplete noticeably faster than yellow when printing skin tones and blue-sky images on glossy paper, plan to keep spares of those two colours. Choosing the XXL tier means fewer interruptions mid-print-run, which matters when you're printing a batch of photos or a school project at the last minute. Bundle packs are available and represent a practical way to stock multiple variants at once. Delivery is free on qualifying orders over $99 (conditions apply), and orders are dispatched Australia-wide. See our full range of Canon ink cartridges for other Canon families.
General FAQ
What is the difference between the PGI-680 and CLI-681 ink cartridges?
The PGI-680 is a pigment-based black ink cartridge used primarily for crisp, smear-resistant text printing. The CLI-681 is a dye-based set covering photo black, cyan, magenta, and yellow, and on select PIXMA models (TS8160, TS8260, TS8360, TS8360a, TS9160), an optional photo blue. Together, the two types give the PIXMA system a dual-black architecture: one black optimised for documents, another for photos.
What is the page yield difference between the PGI-680, PGI-680XL, and PGI-680XXL?
The standard PGI-680 black yields 200 pages, the PGI-680XL yields 400 pages, and the PGI-680XXL yields 600 pages (all at 5% coverage). For the CLI-681 colour cartridges, the standard yields 250 pages each, while the CLI-681XXL colours yield 760 pages each. If you print regularly, the XXL tier reduces how often you need to replace cartridges and lowers your cost per page.
Are compatible Canon PGI-680 and CLI-681 ink cartridges safe to use?
Yes. Compatible ink cartridges for this family are stocked at Ink Depot and come with a product warranty. Under Australian Consumer Law, using a compatible cartridge does not void your printer's manufacturer warranty. Compatible options are available as individual cartridges and in multi-pack bundles.
