Expected page output and photo print yields
Page yields for Canon PGI-72 cartridges are measured under ISO/IEC 29102 photo printing standards using continuous print runs. Because pigment consumption varies widely by paper finish and image colour density, individual shade yields differ significantly across A3+ and 10x15cm prints.

Pro Tip for LUCIA Pigment Systems
Chroma Optimizer (PGI-72CO) clear coat is applied across all glossy photo prints to eliminate bronzing and unify surface gloss, meaning it often depletes faster than individual colour pigments when printing on gloss or lustre media.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do individual PGI-72 colour cartridges deplete at different rates?
Pigment consumption depends directly on image colour profile and media type. Glossy media consumes Chroma Optimizer on every print, while monochrome photos draw heavily on Photo Black, Matte Black and Grey without depleting bright colours.
What is the primary function of the PGI-72CO Chroma Optimizer cartridge?
The Chroma Optimizer is a clear resin coating applied over glossy and lustre photo papers. It fills the gaps between pigment particles to smooth light reflection, eliminate optical bronzing and maintain consistent gloss across the entire print surface.
Can I print using only Black PGI-72 cartridges if a colour tank runs dry?
No, the PIXMA Pro-10 printhead architecture requires all 10 PGI-72 slots to contain ink with minimum fluid levels to prevent air ingestion and thermal printhead damage, even when printing purely black-and-white photos.
Is PGI-72 the same as PGI 72?
Yes, PGI-72 and PGI 72 refer to the exact same Canon ink cartridge series. The hyphen is simply a formatting variation used in retail listings, with both designations identifying genuine 14ml pigment cartridges.
