Expert Insight
The HP OfficeJet Pro series relies on heavy automatic printhead servicing. If you print primarily in black, tiny amounts of cyan, magenta, and yellow ink are still consumed during self-maintenance to keep print nozzles clear. Installing 955XL high-yield colour cartridges prevents unexpected colour lockouts when running single-colour print runs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install a high-yield HP 955XL cartridge alongside a standard HP 955 cartridge?
Yes. Standard HP 955 and high-yield HP 955XL cartridges share identical external casing dimensions and fit into the exact same carriage slots. You can replace individual colours with XL units as they run out without causing mechanical or firmware conflicts.
Why does my printer report low colour ink when I only print black text?
HP OfficeJet Pro series printers perform periodic microscopic printhead purges using all four ink channels to prevent nozzle clogging and thermal printhead damage. Consequently, colour ink levels slowly drop over time even if your print driver is set strictly to greyscale.
Will compatible HP 955XL cartridges work with continuous Wi-Fi updates enabled?
Compatible 955XL cartridges supplied with current-generation microchips will pass printer authentication. However, disabling automatic background firmware updates on your HP OfficeJet Pro menu prevents automatic software patches from blocking third-party chip communication down the track.
