Understanding Mechanical Pencil Options

Mechanical pencils hold a replaceable graphite lead inside a reusable barrel, advancing it through the tip as you write rather than needing a sharpener. The main decision when buying one is lead diameter — it drives how thick the line is, how easily the lead snaps, and how the pencil feels in hand.

Choosing the Right Mechanical Pencil Lead Size

Lead SizeTypical LineSuitable For
0.5mmFine and controlledDetailed handwriting and precise drawing; also good for compact notes and calculations.
0.7mmMedium width with a stronger leadThe everyday default — schoolwork, office notes, general stationery.
0.9mmBroader line with a thicker leadBolder writing and sketching, or anyone who tends to press hard.

Choosing Between 0.5mm, 0.7mm and 0.9mm

Fine writing and tight line control point you toward 0.5mm. Step up to 0.7mm if you've found thinner leads snap too easily under everyday pressure — it's a touch broader but noticeably sturdier.

0.9mm is the boldest of the three: the thicker lead handles more pressure and suits sketching or larger handwriting, though the trade-off is a less precise point than the finer sizes offer.

Choosing Replacement Leads

Leads have to match the diameter your pencil takes — 0.5mm leads for a 0.5mm pencil, 0.7mm for a 0.7mm pencil, and so on. Fit the wrong size and the lead either won't advance properly or jams inside the barrel.

Grade matters too, separately from size. HB remains the practical general-purpose choice for writing and note-taking, while H produces a lighter, firmer mark. Both diameter and grade are usually printed on the product title, so it's worth checking both before ordering refills.

Mechanical Pencils or Wood-Cased Pencils?

A mechanical pencil earns its keep when you want something refillable with a line width that never changes — good for note-taking, calculations, study and controlled drawing.

A wood-cased pencil gives up that consistency in exchange for more control over the point itself: sharpen it to a fine tip, or use the side of the lead for broader shading. Which one suits you comes down to whether a steady line matters more than shaping the point yourself.

Options for Students, Offices and Classrooms

Ink Depot carries individual mechanical pencils, multipacks and replacement lead refills from Staedtler, uni and Paper Mate. Single items work well for students and personal supplies; boxed quantities suit classrooms, offices and shared stationery cupboards that go through pencils quickly.

Some listings are pencils, others are lead refills — check the full product title before ordering to be sure which you're getting. Pack quantities, lead sizes, pricing and stock are all shown against each product above, with delivery available across Australia.
