Choosing between genuine and compatible cartridges
Selecting alternative consumables can lower ongoing office expenses while maintaining clear text output. Under Australian Consumer Law, using compatible cartridges does not void your printer warranty. Read our detailed guide to compare genuine and compatible cartridges before making your purchase decision.
Choosing the right cartridge setup
If you print mainly text documents, high-yield 950XL (CN045AA) black cartridges reduce your cost per page significantly. If you print photos or colour graphics, bundle packs containing 951XL (CN046AA, CN047AA, CN048AA) colour cartridges provide complete balance for high-volume jobs. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mix individual genuine HP cartridges with compatible HP 950XL or 951XL cartridges?
Yes, genuine and compatible HP 950XL and 951XL cartridges operate independently in individual colour slots, allowing you to replace single depleted units as needed without disturbing remaining cartridges.
What happens if one colour cartridge runs out on the HP OfficeJet Pro 251dw?
The OfficeJet Pro 251dw uses individual printhead channels for each ink colour. To protect the printhead from overheating or air drying, the printer requires all four cartridges (Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow) to contain ink before printing can continue.
Are 950XL black cartridges physically larger than standard 950 cartridges?
No, HP 950XL (CN045AA) cartridges have identical external dimensions to standard 950 cartridges and fit into the exact same cartridge slot inside the OfficeJet Pro 251dw. The XL designation simply indicates a higher fill volume of ink.
