Expected page output and replacement cycles
Epson calculates page yields using ISO/IEC 24711 standard test patterns under continuous printing conditions. For busy small offices, standard 812 cartridges suit occasional use, whereas 812XL capacity cartridges deliver over three times the print volume to keep workflow interruptions minimal.

Choosing between genuine and compatible options
Selecting compatible 812XL cartridges offers significant cost savings without compromising clear text or rich document colour. Under Australian Consumer Law, using compatible cartridges does not void your printer warranty. Learn more in our guide on genuine vs compatible cartridges.

Consumable tip
When replacing individual inks in this four-cartridge system, avoid removing semi-depleted cartridges until new replacements are ready to install, as leaving the printhead exposure points open can cause internal ink drying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mix standard 812 and high-yield 812XL cartridges in the same printer?
Yes, the WorkForce Pro WF-3820 accepts mixed capacities. You can install an 812XL black cartridge alongside standard 812 cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges without issue.
What is the main operational difference between 812, 812XL, and 812XXL ink cartridges?
All three series share the same physical slot dimensions inside the printer. The XL and XXL designations indicate a higher ink fill volume, yielding more printed pages before needing replacement.
How does the printer handle colour ink depletion during mono-only document printing?
Even when printing black text documents exclusively, tiny amounts of colour ink are used during automated maintenance cycles to keep the micro-nozzles clear, so colour cartridges will gradually deplete over time.
