Brother Fax-685MC Ribbons
Shop ribbons for your Brother Fax-685MC, which uses Brother PC-404RF thermal transfer ribbons. Designed as a reliable plain-paper fax printer with a built-in answering system, the Fax-685MC relies on continuous thermal transfer film to deliver crisp black text on standard office paper. Ink Depot has been supplying genuine fax consumables for this printer since Jan 1997. Buying multi-roll PC-404RF refill packs reduces cost per page during high-volume document receipts. Our 4.8 Google rating reflects a long-standing track record of premium cartridge performance.
Thermal Ribbon Page Output and Printing Expectations
Thermal transfer ribbons print fixed page lengths based on roll capacity rather than ink coverage percentage. Using standard A4 fax transmissions, genuine Brother ribbons deliver consistent text legibility across the entire roll without fading or line breakage.

Pro Tip
Keep spare PC-404RF refill rolls stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, as elevated ambient temperatures can degrade the thermal ink film coating before installation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reuse or rewind a used Brother thermal fax ribbon roll?
No, thermal transfer ribbons transfer ink permanently onto plain paper during heating, leaving a negative impression on the used film. Rewinding a used roll will result in unreadable or missing text.
How does a ribbon refill roll differ from a complete ribbon cartridge?
A complete ribbon cartridge includes the plastic casing gears and roller frame, whereas PC-404RF refill rolls replace only the thermal film roll inside your existing cartridge housing, offering a lower replacement cost.
How can I tell when my Brother Fax-685MC ribbon needs replacing?
The Fax-685MC screen will display a "Check Ribbon" or "Change Ribbon" message when the end of the thermal film roll is reached, preventing incomplete document transmissions.
