Canon i990 Ink Cartridges
Your Canon i990 uses the BCI-3E / BCI-6 ink cartridge series. Ink Depot has been supplying reliable ink cartridges for this photo printer since Jan 2003. Engineered for high-density photo printing, this 7-colour ink system uses dedicated BCI-6PC Photo Cyan and BCI-6PM Photo Magenta cartridges alongside BCI-6R Red to produce rich tonal gradations. Our 4.8 Google rating reflects a long-standing track record of premium cartridge performance.
Expected print output and cartridge usage
Cartridge yields for inkjet photo systems are measured using standard ISO/IEC testing guidelines based on 5% page coverage. In actual photo printing, high ink coverage and multi-colour blending reduce individual cartridge longevity, with photo shades depleting faster than standard black ink.

When replacing inks in multi-colour photo systems like the Canon i990, always keep spare BCI-6PC Photo Cyan and BCI-6PM Photo Magenta cartridges ready, as photographic printing consumes lighter shading inks much faster than standard cyan or magenta.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Canon i990 run out of Photo Cyan and Photo Magenta faster than standard Cyan and Magenta?
Photo printing uses BCI-6PC Photo Cyan and BCI-6PM Photo Magenta for continuous tone skin shades and highlights. Because light areas form most photo compositions, these lighter dye inks deplete significantly faster than high-density primary colours.
Can I install a single BCI-6 colour cartridge without replacing the rest of the set?
Yes. The Canon i990 features an individual tank system, allowing you to replace only the depleted BCI-6 cartridge code without discarding partially filled tanks.
How does the BCI-6R Red cartridge impact photographic print quality?
The dedicated BCI-6R Red ink cartridge expands the printer's colour gamut, producing warmer flesh tones and vivid autumn landscapes that standard 4-colour or 6-colour CMYK systems cannot match.
