Ink Depot has supplied reliable consumables for this compact wireless home office multi-function printer since Jan 2007. Replacing monochrome LC57BK black cartridges more frequently maintains clear text output while preserving LC57 cyan, magenta, and yellow supplies for mixed document printing.
Expected page output and replacement cycles
Standard LC57 black cartridges yield roughly 420 to 500 pages, while LC57 colour cartridges yield up to 450 pages based on ISO/IEC standard test patterns. Actual output varies according to document coverage and print density.

Choosing between genuine and compatible cartridges
Under Australian Consumer Law, using compatible cartridges does not void your printer warranty. Compatible cartridges offer a cost-effective alternative to genuine Brother supplies, producing crisp text and vivid colours for everyday home office printing. You can compare genuine and compatible ink cartridges in our detailed guide to help select the ideal option for your printing volume.
Smart stocking and order options
If you print text documents regularly, stocking extra LC57BK black cartridges prevents downtime, whereas buying multipacks ensures all four colours remain balanced. Cartridge Selection Pro Tip
Purchasing LC57 bundle packs rather than single colour cartridges provides a lower per-cartridge cost and ensures you always have all three primary colours ready when dynamic colour balancing depletes cyan, magenta, or yellow simultaneously.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do LC57 cartridges have integrated printheads?
No, LC57 cartridges are individual ink tanks without integrated printheads. The printhead remains built into the Brother MFC-685CW printer, meaning replacing an ink cartridge only replenishes the ink supply without replacing the internal firing mechanism.
Can I mix genuine Brother LC57 cartridges with compatible LC57 cartridges?
Yes, compatible LC57 cartridges are engineered to work seamlessly alongside genuine Brother cartridges in the same colour set without causing recognition issues or ink formula cross-contamination.
Why does my yellow LC57 cartridge deplete even if I mostly print black text?
The Brother MFC-685CW periodically uses minor amounts of colour ink from LC57C, LC57M, and LC57Y during background ink delivery cycles to prevent printhead nozzles from drying out, ensuring consistent text and image performance.
