What is toner?
Toner is used instead of ink in laser printers. Unlike ink, a printer toner cartridge contains toner powder usually consisting of components which include synthetic resin, silicon, wax, magnetisable metal oxides, pigments in black and three other colours. The composition of the powder in a laser toner cartridge varies from brand to brand and is often a trademark secret formula. Toner powder particles measure 5 to 30 micrometres in size. Since toner contains chemicals that are harmful to health, the powder should never be inhaled and the cartridge safely disposed of.
The working mechanism of toner cartridges
Toner powder is stored inside of a cartridge which is installed into the laser printer. The toner particles from the toner cartridge are collected and transferred to the paper corresponding to the text or images through the imaging/printing drum that is electrostatically charged using lasers inside the printer. The paper is heated so that the toner particles melt and set properly to give clear printouts. Colour laser printers use four colour cartridges instead of one and the paper undergoes four passes to print out in colour.
